Rather than dwelling on the conflict and the past, a solution-focused mediatior asks both parties: What would you prefer instead of continuing to fight in court? The focus is on a changed future. This could be money, privacy, recognition, acknowledgements, freedom, an apology or any number of other items most important to acheive change.
People are considered capable of formulating their own goal and of devising solutions. The expertise of the mediator lies in asking questions that gets parties to think and recognize this and to uncover the necessary catalysts in each particular conflict that can be used to draw the parties closer to an agreement.
